Almost ready to give up on her dream of becoming a writer in the Big Apple, eager young Alice O'Connor (Traylor Howard) receives the shock of her life when she discovers that her biological father is actually Bram Shepherd (Alfred Molina), renowned author of a great American novel that is required reading on every college campus. So she sets out to meet the man whose DNA she shares-only to find out that he's a womanizing, egocentric, debt- ridden burnout who hasn't written anything decent in 30 years. Still, after a shaky introduction, they both resolve to try to make a go of the father- daughter thing and stay together for a while. At least it's a start.
