  1. Pilot (Original US Airdate Sept 24th 2001)
Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh is a sexy Boston medical examiner, who'll go above and beyond the law to investigate crime. After a brief time in Los Angeles, Jordan returns to her home town of Boston and returns to her job at Massachusetts State Coroner's Office. Here she reunites with her father and ex-cop Max. Max is still troubled by the murder of his wife and Jordan's mother, which is still unsolved. Jordan hits it off with her new boss, Dr. Garret Macy, who is also troubled with his own demons. Along with him, Jordan meets her new colleagues, Dr. Trey Sanders, and Dr. Mahesh "Bug". In her first case back home, the apparent suicide of a teen prostitute, leads Jordan to believe a cover up by local officials. When probing deeper with Detective Collins, Jordan may have to watch out for her own life.
  2. The Dawn Of A New Day (Original US Airdate | 1 Oct 2001)
MACKENZIE PHILLIPS GUEST-STARS AS WIDOWED WAITRESS -- Mackenzie Phillips ("One Day at a Time," "So Weird") guest-stars as a waitress whose unusual reaction to the shooting death of her cab driver husband makes Jordan (Jill Hennessy) curious about the real story behind the cabbie's killing. While at the crime scene, Jordan also encounters Edward "Eddy" Winslow (guest star D.W. Moffett, "Traffic," "For Your Love"), the homicide detective involved at the end of her father's career as a cop. Meanwhile, Garret (Miguel Ferrer) feels uncomfortable with the attention he receives from "the weird 'intake' girl," while Trey (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali) enlists "Bug" (Ravi Kapoor) in a quest to identify "Mr. Stinky," an unclaimed corpse whose tenure at the morgue has become lengthy. Ken Howard also stars and two-time Emmy Award nominee Lois Nettleton ("Fear on Trial," "The Golden Girls") guest-stars.
  3. The Ties That Bind (Original US Airdate 8 Oct 2001)
Jordan (Jill Hennessy) goes to prison where she attempts to piece together a scenario to confirm her hunch that the torso of a raped, murdered and dismembered woman belonged to a corrections officer killed on the job. Ironically, Jordan's home life seems too confining as the stress of staying with her father, Max (Ken Howard), and his new girlfriend, Evelyn (guest star Lois Nettleton), causes Jordan to clash with her colleague, Trey (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali). Meanwhile, Garret (Miguel Ferrer) fears he may be dealing with an 85-year-old "black widow" and Bug (Ravi Kapoor) dreads informing another woman the cause of her husband's death.
  4. You Can't Go Home Again (Original US Airdate 22 Oct 2001)
Loyalty stokes Jordan's (Jill Hennessy) desire to figure out how a hero firefighter, Jimmy Donnelly (guest star Tom Bresnahan) -- who was also her childhood best friend, died battling a suspicious blaze. Despite warnings from both her disapproving superior, Dr. Grace Yakura (guest star Tamyln Tomita) and Det. Eddy Winslow (guest star D.W. Moffett, "Traffic"), Jordan asks Max (Ken Howard) to help her investigate, but they are disappointed by what the evidence points to. Meanwhile, Garret (Miguel Ferrer) attempts to think like a 17-year-old in the hopes of finding the perfect birthday gift for his daughter, Abby (guest star Alex McKenna), and Trey (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali) and Bug (Ravi Kapoor) search for a reason why the laughter died when they do an autopsy on Lily's (guest star Kathryn Hahn) favorite TV clown.
  5. Believers (Original US Airdate Oct 29 2001)
Jordan (Jill Hennessy) investigates the death of a Massachusetts Senator's daughter found stabbed in a park, apparently murdered by her boyfriend. Meanwhile, Garret (Miguel Ferrer) wrestles with the issues surrounding a man's wish to be buried as an anatomically correct woman, while Bug (Ravi Kapoor) and Trey (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali) face weighty religious issues and potentially explosive consequences when they attempt an autopsy on an obese Orthodox Jewish man. The autopsy of a schoolboy killed in a traffic accident leads Jordan (Jill Hennessy) to discover that the pre-teen actually died while being kidnapped along with his female classmate. Despite resistance from Evelyn (guest star Lois Nettleton), Max (Ken Howard) helps Jordan search for the missing girl by contacting some of his old cronies, such as a retired detective (guest star Howard Hesseman, "Head of the Class"). Meanwhile, Trey (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali) and Bug (Ravi Kapoor) engage in a battle of wits to impress a sexy anthropologist (guest star Neta Golding). Garrett (Miguel Ferrer) comes to terms with his feelings for Lily (guest star Kathryn Hahn). Wallace Shawn ("My Dinner with Andre," "Toy Story") guest-stars as a state psychologist.
  7. Digger Part 1 (Original US Airdate Nov 19 2001)

Meanwhile: Garrett (Miguel Ferrer) comes to grips with his relationship with Lily (guest star Kathryn Hahn); Max' (Ken Howard) love life hits a snag with the loss of his live-in girlfriend; and concerned about deportation, Nigel (Steve Valentine) attempts to outsmart the INS with the help of a willing co-worker. Meanwhile, Garrett adjusts to the pressures and responsibilities of his new position. Also, the stage is set for the wedding of Nigel (Steve Valentine) and Lily (guest star Kathryn Hahn) as they try to outsmart the INS. Ken Howard, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali and Ravi Kapoor also star

Winslow went too far while making the arrest. Also, Garrett opts to forgo his annual Christmas feast with his ex-wife, Maggie (guest star) and join Lily (Kathryn Hahn) for a Thai dining experience, angering his daughter, Abby (guest star Alex McKenna), while Trey (Mahershalalhasbaz Ali) worries if Nigel's (Steve Valentine) invitation for a weekend on the ski slopes also includes a slalom under the sheets. Ravi Kapoor also stars.

Meanwhile, Max (Ken Howard), finds himself, on the eve of his bar opening, squaring off against a familiar extortionist and childhood friend, and Trey (Mahershalalhasbaz Ali), Bug (Ravi Kapoor), Nigel (Steve Valentine), Lily (Kathryn Hahn) and Garret (Miguel Ferrer) wage a war of their own against the budget and the possibility that one of them may be looking for a new job.      In an annual Cavanaugh tradition, Jordan (Jill Hennessy) joins with Woody (guest star Jerry O'Connell) and the rest of the morgue staff to examine an unsolved homicide from Max' (Ken Howard) days as a rookie detective -- which coincided with the killing spree of the famed Boston Strangler.
